Covid has been a time of great reflection.

Almost everyone I spoke to believes that Thailand must find a better way forward for its tourism, that it mustn't go back to the wrong old ways, and that this is an opportunity to rise to the occasion.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has said that pursuing numbers is no longer its goal – the 40m arrivals in 2019 are not on its immediate radar.

Yet the reality is that this industry is a vital part of its economy (12% of GDP).

There were about 340,000 foreign tourists in the fourth quarter of 2021, up from 45,000 in the previous three months, and it is expecting 5.5 million tourists in 2022.

Given these numbers, it could be a long, slow recovery but no one I spoke to seems in a big hurry. And anyway, you can't hurry anywhere in Bangkok because the traffic jams are back, which you could say is a good thing.

They're expecting 5.5 million tourists this year, yes 2022.

So why is ShareRing not active among these Thailand tourists?

Japan will allow small groups of tourists on package tours into the country this month on an experimental basis, a first step in welcoming back the foreign travellers.

Travellers from Australia, the USA, Singapore and Thailand have received three vaccination shots and have medical insurance will be allowed in as small groups on package tours, the Japan Tourism Agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

Groups will need preset itineraries and must be accompanied by travel agency staff, as reported by the Yomiuri newspaper earlier.

According to the Japan Tourism Agency, six travel agents, such as JTB, Nippon Travel Agency, and Jalpack, will participate in the experimental project.

Japan already permits visitors from 106 countries, subject to an international arrival cap of 10,000 per day and limited to those visiting Japan for purposes other than tourism, such as business and study.
